Jeju is known for its stone grandfathers. The Geumneung Stone Garden is home to some of the most famous stone grandfathers on the island. While many are the standard hareubang shape, some have been carved by local artists into unconventional shapes. There are also statues depicting local and Buddhist themes.
Dol hareubang
In Jeju Island, there are several places where you can see Dol Hareubang. The statues, which appear in shops and public entrances, are associated with shamanic practices. In Jeju dialect, Dol means stone and ‘hareubang’ means grandfather. The statues are said to offer protection and ward off demons.
There are several theories about how these statues came about. The first is that they are derived from the jangseungs used in mainland Korea, although the name beoksu in southern Korea is more common. Another theory says that they were made in Jeju around 1754, and were later placed outside of the fortress’ gates.
